Ruth Churchill Dower, Director of Earlyarts and creative learning consultancy, Isaacs UK, has won the prestigious Ideas Incubator Programme run by Futurelab with her design of the Dream Catcher©, an interactive handheld unit aimed at giving young children a voice and bridging play and communication gaps between children and parents. The Dream Catcher, aimed at 3 - 5 year olds, will feature a character who builds a strong friendship with its owner, and delights in learning about their dreams, stories, ideas, songs and games whilst offering their young friend options to capture those ideas and wirelessly beam them to another unit situated with a parent or carer. The adult will be able to enjoy significant playful moments in their child's life, providing an insight into their child's creative potential and a deeper understanding of their imaginary and real worlds. Above all, Dream Catcher intends to engage parents in joint play with their children, providing a creative and non-threatening environment for shared experiences as they grow together in their discoveries and conversations. More information about Dream Catcher© on the Futurelab website here. Futurelab will be profiling the ideas behind Dream Catcher©, and its potential for use by Family Support Workers, in a special edition in The Guardian on Tuesday 17th June.
