A Literature Review of Research on 'Arts Integration' or 'Interdisciplinary' Arts Educational Practices from 1995 to 2007 April 2007, Arts Education Partnership/USA This literature review, which was commissioned by Arts Education Partnership, covers what has been written in the arts integration field between 1995 and 2007. Although there is no single concept about what arts integration means, the review covers the range of educational practices labeled as ‘arts integration’, ‘interdisciplinary,’ ‘arts-infused,’ or ‘cross-disciplinary,’ as well as ‘thematic’ and ‘arts-based’. Some international resources are included, although the emphasis is on arts integration in the United States. The review uncovers three main categories of ‘arts integration’: arts integration as learning “through” and “with” the arts arts integration as a curricular connections process; and arts integration as collaborative engagement. With an historical overview, definitions and theoretical frameworks for arts integration, research and evaluation studies as well as methods and practices for each of the art forms, it is an essential resource for anyone involved in the research, theories, or methods and practices of arts integration.
