Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) were introduced in 1995 and so far there are 74 approved sectors and over 97,000 apprentices in training. MAs give the employer clear guides about structured training and learning, resulting in qualifications to NVQ Level three. MAs involve a three-way partnership between the Modern Apprentice, the employer/employing organisation and the local Training and Enterprise Councils. Progress in training MAs was investigated in six NHS Trusts. These were East Glamorgan, North East Lincolnshire, Tameside and Glossop Acute Services, Southern Derbyshire Mental Health, Guys and St Thomas Hospital, and the Kingsmill Centre for Healthcare Services. Most reports were favourable though the upper age limit of 25 was seen as unnecessary. Eleven of the MAs currently available could be relevant to NHS organisations, such as Physiological Measurement and Accountancy. Cites numerous references.
