Brief Synopsis
The JISC Image Digitisation Initiative (JIDI) created archive quality digital images from a number of Higher Education image collections throughout the UK. The selection criteria included scholarly importance and copyright status.

The JIDI Collections
The JIDI Collections have been grouped into subject areas and include

  • Art and Design
  • Geology
  • Social History
  • Special Collections including the Design Council Archives and the Gertrude Bell Archive.
The JIDI Collections page contains more information.

Project Objectives
The objectives of the JIDI project were to:

  • Create a substantial body of digitised archive images contributing to the JISC's Distributed National Electronic Resource (DNER).
  • Contribute experiences to the knowledge base of the JISC's Technical Advisory Service for Imaging (TASI), a major resource for UK Higher Education.
  • Help create local areas of skill in image digitisation within the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) taking part.

Image Delivery
The JIDI Images have been delivered to the UK HE community in a number of ways.
Nine of the twelve collections involved are delivered by VADS, the Visual Arts Data Service, part of the Arts and Humanities Data Service.
The delivery of the other collections is under consideration by the JISC's Committee for Electronic Information (CEI).
