Designing for Play PDF
On 27 October 2008 the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment
(CABE) published Designing and planning for play. This report discusses the challenge faced by England's local authorities over the next three years to deliver the national play strategy, by enriching public spaces with the upgrade of 3,500 play areas. It argues that if this is done strategically, creatively and without undue fear of risk, it could represent a pinnacle for the design of public space in England. To get there, local authorities need to take a much more holistic, imaginative and collaborative approach to the design of play space, led by professionals with the appropriate range of skills, knowledge and experience. Children should be put at the heart of the planning and design of public space for play, aided by practitioners with a wide variety of skillsets. To download the report visit here.

Integrated budgets for children's services - Daniel Lombard, Community Care, 10/11/08 PDF
Individual budgets drawing on social care, health and education should be rolled out to all children's services, according to social enterprise In Control. The self-directed-support group argues that the integrated funding model is essential for flexible, joined-up support addressing the children's needs in a holistic way. In Control's discussion paper, A Whole Life Approach to Personalisation: Self-directed support for every child and young person, concludes: "A child's life is not split into sectors or different systems. Support to a child should reflect the whole child's life and their support needs." - Here

Teaching Artist Research and Center for Arts Policy News PDF
Several months ago some of you received an email from the Center for Arts Policy with the message that, after a decade of pathbreaking work, Columbia College Chicago would close the Center for Arts Policy at the end of August.  Columbia's generous support for the Center sustained it for a decade, but the financial realities of Columbia's rapid growth made it impossible to continue the subsidy the Center required.  Many of you responded with heartening support and sympathy.  My staff and I promised to look for ways to sustain the Center's projects, and we promised to let you know just how things worked out.

Obama Tapped Hal Prince, Michael Chabon to Craft Culture Plank - Bloomberg News, 10/31/2008 PDF
"Senator Barack Obama writes poetry, gets props from Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z, and is the first President Elect to include a far-reaching arts plank in his platform. The proposals range from increased support for arts education and the National Endowment for the Arts, to changing the federal tax code for artists. 'It is unprecedented,' said Robert L. Lynch, president and chief executive officer of Americans for the Arts, a Washington- based arts advocacy group, explaining that no presidential candidate in recent times has addressed cultural issues in such detail."  More here.
